Description of Position
The Senior Project Accountant provides full financial oversight for construction projects, ensuring accurate job cost tracking, timely billing, and compliant revenue recognition. The Senior Project Accountant supports strategic financial decisions by delivering detailed analysis of project performance, identifying risks, and ensuring financial integrity throughout all phases of project work.
Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Maintain financial setup and ongoing cost control for projects.
- Review job budgets and detailed cost code structures aligned scopes with project team.
- Track and reconcile costs including union labor, fabrication shop production, material releases, equipment rentals, and subcontractor costs.
- Conduct monthly job cost reviews with project managers to evaluate variances and assess cost‑to‑complete.
- Prepare monthly project billing, including progress billing, T&M billing, and milestone-based invoices.
- Track retention (retainage) and ensure proper treatment for both customer billings and subcontractor payments.
- Ensure timely and accurate revenue recognition under percent-complete accounting specific to scopes.
- Support pricing, tracking, and financial management of change orders.
- Update job budgets, committed costs, and contract values as change orders progress through approval.
- Maintain logs for pending, approved, and disputed COs to help project teams understand labor impacts and projected margins.
- Coordinate with payroll to ensure accurate union labor cost reporting (OCIP/CCIP reporting).
- Review subcontractor billings for compliance.
- Verify lien releases, insurance compliance, and retention requirements.
- Frequently work with the Compliance Coordinator to ensure all requirements are met.
- Prepare monthly Work-In-Progress reports including percent-complete, cost-to-complete, revenue, and margin forecasting at a job level.
- Provide training and guidance to project managers and coordinators on budgeting, cost control, and financial best practices.
- Support implementation and optimization of ERP systems and other software (eg. Spectrum).
Salary Range: $85,000.00 – $110,000.00, depending on experience and qualifications
Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred.
- 5+ years of project accounting experience, with at least 2–3 years in mechanical, MEP, or specialty trade construction.
- Strong understanding of job cost accounting, percent-complete revenue, and mechanical project workflows.
- Proficiency with construction ERP systems and mechanical project management tools.
- Strong Excel skills for labor productivity tracking, cost analysis, and forecasting.
- Knowledge of California construction billing practices and regulations.
- Highly organized, detail‑oriented, and proficient at managing tight month-end timelines.
